HISTORY

Rebuilt between the 17th and 19th centuries, it took on its current shape, called "tortoise", and churches and stately palaces were built there.

Belonging for centuries to the Kingdom of Naples and then to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Sperlonga it was included in the ancient province of Terra di Lavoro, in particular in the district of Gaeta. Even after the military defeat of Francis II of Bourbon by Garibaldi and the subsequent annexation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to the Kingdom of Sardinia (which became the Kingdom of Italy in 1861), Sperlonga continued to be part of the aforementioned province. In 1927, as the fascist regime wanted to downsize the province of Terra di Lavoro, the territory of the municipality of Sperlonga was annexed to Lazio (province of Frosinone, then to the Province of Rome), removing it from Campania, where in that same period the province of Caserta. From 1934 the town was incorporated into the newly established province of Latina (at the time Littoria).

The development of Sperlonga, based above all on tourism, began after the opening of the Via Flacca, a coastal road that connects Terracina to Gaeta, passing through the coast of Fondi, inaugurated on 9 February 1958. Since then, having broken the centuries-old isolation, the town gradually emerged from the extreme poverty that characterized it. Strong impetus was also given to it by the discovery of the sculptures of the villa of Tiberius (1957).
