It flows among the Alban hills with the name of Marrana. Having penetrated the metropolitan area of Rome, it takes the name of the Marranella ditch to distinguish it from the other ditches that cross the Roman countryside, commonly called marrane.

The name derives from the fundus or ager maranus, lapped by the stream in its part initial.

Although it was a river present since ancient times and existed in sight until 1934, currently, in the urban centre, the course of the ditch disappears from view, channeled into an underground collector.

At street level of Acqua Bullicante receives the waters of the bullicame or boiling springs, so called due to the presence in them of sulphurous gaseous emanations which made them boil and which gave its name to the estate which still existed in the 19th century.[1] Archaeological excavations testify, in via di Acqua Bullicante, the presence of an ancient rural village dating back to at least the 2nd century BC, perhaps identifiable with the ancient city of Caenina on via Labicana.

The course of the ditch heads north, following via della Marranella, to reach Largo Preneste, then crosses the former SNIA Viscosa factories after having fed the artificial lake of the same name, following the route of the Rome-Pescara railway line.

In these rural stretches you can still observe the stream flowing through 'open. Finally, it flows into the Aniene along the Via di Pietralata.

The hamlet Marranella took its name from the ditch, located on the north-west corner between Via Casilina and Via di Acqua Bullicante. Since 1870, together with the neighboring settlements of Prenestino, Torrione, the Galliano hamlet, Acqua Bullicante and Casilino, it has formed the urban area of Pigneto.
