The location;
The Umberto area, or mainland Syracuse, is the third historic district of the city of Syracuse.
It corresponds to the southern promontory of Syracuse extending up to the island of Ortigia.
The area was built during the urban expansion on the mainland in the last decades of the 19th century.
Its main streets are: Corso Umberto I, Piazzale Guglielmo Marconi (historically known as "puzzu ngegnere".
The area includes the two bridges that connect Ortigia to the rest of the city: the Santa Lucia bridge on the right side
of the large port and inaugurated in 2004, and to its left the older central bridge Umberto I
(Umbertine bridge for the Syracusans), in the latter there was the Ligne gate (or Ligny) demolished in 1893 together with the other fortifications of the Spanish era.
Of the seventeenth-century gate, the work of Carlos de Grunenbergh, today only the royal coat of arms of Spain
(preserved in the Bellomo museum) and the coat of arms of the viceroy Ligne (placed on the "dei Cattivi" wall at the Marina) remain.--fdd706a5f6338e1179c88aef67d2da61!
