"The old city has substantially preserved its urban layout unchanged. It has characteristics of extraordinary interest; it is a continuous overlapping of building structures from various eras and different cultural matrices. It has narrow and winding streets, a tangle of streets, according to a typology found in the Islamic world; this varied layout dates back to the first half of 900 AD, a period in which the city was conquered by the Saracens, who dominated it for about thirty years. A main road , Via Antonietta De Pace, divides it into two areas, along the east - west direction, (scirocco and tramontana) according to a classic planning of Greek cities. The island is entirely surrounded by a bastioned wall, which extends for a length of about a kilometer and a half; after the massacre of Otranto by the Turks (1480) and the first half of the following century, the city in fact worked on the construction of defensive structures to face the continuous enemy attacks. Of this bastioned wall, which had its fulcrum in the Castle, only the lower part remains today, having been demolished up to street level between 1879 and 1887. A panoramic road, the Riviera, opened on the site of the ancient walls, allows stroll around the island, enjoying exciting scenery."
