Cosio Valtellino is one of the largest and most important municipalities in the lower Valtellina, on the orobic side (of the “maròch”, as opposed to that of the “cech”), made up of the two main nuclei of Regoledo (the most populated, with 3969 inhabitants, and the municipal headquarters) and Cosio (the ancient main centre, now downsized to a nucleus of 999 inhabitants), to which is added the important hamlet of Sacco (302 inhabitants), on the western side of the lower Val Gerola, 7 km from Morbegno.
The name of Cosio Valtellino was adopted after the Unification of Italy, and precisely in 1863, replacing the previous "Cosio", to avoid confusion between the part and the whole, that is, between the nucleus of Cosio, still called that today, and the entire municipal territory.
The name Cosio probably derives from the pre-Aryan root " Cus”, but can also be compared to the Etruscan locality “Cosae”, or to the “Cosa” localities near Turi or Paestum (Magna Graecia). The etymology of Regoledo is more certain, from “rogor”, oak. The Etruscan presence, in pre-Roman times, on the valley floor is very probable; minus the presence of various peoples of Celtic lineage (Gauls) in the same number of towns in the Valtellina, including that of the Cosuaneti, who, according to the Quadrio, settled in the territory of present-day Cosio Valtellino.--1b1b39b3228c33a040a2e47010eaddae!
