Tower "THE MASTIO"

At the entrance to the ancient medieval village of Saragano (PG) we find the tower "IL MASTIO", an exclusive building dating back to the early 14th century, which from its position dominates the surrounding countryside with a unique panorama of its kind.

The "IL MASTIO" tower is about 10 meters high and is spread over 2 residential floors of a total usable 96 sq m, with a small plot of land of 240 sq m accessible from outside the walls.
After the entrance to the town we find on our left the stairway that allows access to the tower. Entering the dining room with wood-burning fireplace we will finally be able to look out the window that illuminates the room to admire the enchanting panorama. In 1985 the building underwent a renovation which involved the roof structure and the inter-floor attics.

Located about 500 meters above sea level, little is known about the origins of the castle of Saragano. Probably the place, located near the Byzantine corridor, was already fortified by the Lombards, like other castles in the Gualdo Cattaneo area, but there is no evidence of this.
It is documented that the current structure dating back to the early fourteenth century withstood a siege by the armies of Perugia (about 1300 AD). Later it then fell under the dominion of the powerful Municipality of Todi, as attested by the presence of the coat of arms with the eagle on its walls. Finally it was conquered by the Municipality of Gualdo Cattaneo, of which it is still a fraction today.
The castle is now well restored, inside the walls there is the former parish church, dedicated to San Pietro Apostolo, of little artistic interest, with a stone baptismal font dating back to the 16th century.
The geographic location is fantastic! Less than 40 minutes by car you can reach Perugia airport and all the major art cities of Umbria (Perugia, Assisi, Todi, Foligno, Spello, Spoleto, ...)
