NOTIONS OF THE AREA:
The municipality of Desenzano del Garda has an elegant historic centre, suitable for long walks through the cobbled streets, discovering small shops of all kinds, and very lively in the evenings. Its lakeside promenade also lends itself well to walking, both in summer and winter. It is very pleasant to stop for lunch in one of the small restaurants overlooking the small and characteristic Porto Vecchio, with its much-photographed Venetian-style bridge and Palazzo Todeschini.
A short walk from here, passing through the pretty Piazza Malvezzi, leads to Desenzano Castle. It performed an important defensive function, accommodating citizens living outside its walls in case of threats from invaders. Today this important historical monument of the city hosts exhibitions, events and concerts, and a visit is also recommended in order to admire, from the walkways along the battlements, the beautiful panorama of Lake Garda from above.
Heading north is the Cathedral of Desenzano, dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena, completed in 1611 and containing works by Andrea Celeste and Tiepolo.
Still further north, still within the historical centre, is the Villa Romana of Desenzano.
The harbour of Desenzano del Garda has always been the hub of the town's activities since ancient times. From here, numerous ferries depart for the many tourist towns that dot the shores of the lake.
