history of the neighborhood
The name of Tor Pignattara has a popular origin, it derives from the history of the Mausoleum of Sant'Elena due to the piñatas found inside it. A name strongly linked to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, whose birth anniversary is on 27 February. This urban area of the V Municipality which extends over the Tiburtino and Prenestino-Labicano districts in Roman times was known as "Ad Duas Lauros". Today it is the most multi-ethnic neighborhood of the capital. Geographically it borders to the north with Verano and Casal Bertone, to the east with Gordiani and Casilino and to the south with Quadraro.
Why Torpignattara is called like this: the "pignatte" on the mausoleum
There once stood an imperial residence, villas and training camps military. Inside the territory there was the mausoleum, characterized by a circular structure with amphorae, also known by the term "pignatte". Ancient objects in common use that were discovered in the following centuries, when the walls collapsed. Over time, citizens have affectionately nicknamed the mausoleum of Sant'Elena as the "tower of the piñatas", hence the name "Torpignattara".--f0263c670c53a567accf438cf214f5c4!
