The documented history of Vasanello dates back to the late Middle Ages, when the King of the Lombards donated to the Pope the territory destined to become the Heritage of San Pietro in Tuscia. Until then, however, the historical information is fragmentary and not very exhaustive and we will have to wait until the Late Middle Ages to be able to follow the story in more detail. In 1212 Pope Innocent III issued a bull delegating the administration of Vasanello to the Podestà of Orte. At the end of the 13th century, Orso Orsini took possession of it and was credited with the construction of the original nucleus of the baronial castle. In any case, Orso Orsini's usurpation did not last long since, in 1282, Martin IV forced him to return Bassanello to the Heritage of San Pietro in Tuscia. The fiefdom returned to the Orsini through Elena, who inherited it upon the death of her husband Gentile Improveti and from her, after the confirmation of ownership with all the related rights by Niccolò V, it passed to her son Ludovico Orsini, in 1452. However, it can be stated that the period of greatest fame for Vasanello began shortly after, during the three years of the pontificate of Callixtus III, when a busty and acute niece of his arrived in Rome from his native Spain: Adriana de Milla. The enterprising girl in fact married Ludovico Orsini with whom she had a son, Orsino, who found herself as a mother one of the most unfortunate careerists that history remembers. In 1489 Orsino Orsini got married to Giulia Farnese, who, to satisfy the social climbing of their respective families, was pushed by her mother-in-law and mother to satisfy the desires of the simoniac Pope Borgia, thus obtaining in exchange the Legations of Viterbo and the Marche. The consenting husband and the Orsini Guelphs received the positions and funding necessary to gain supremacy over the other powerful Colonna family, Ghibellines and their long-time irreducible enemies. Orsino Orsini died in unclear circumstances under the collapse of an attic of the castle on 31 July 1500. In 1504 Geronima Farnese was buried in Bassanello, murdered by her stepson Giovanni Battista Anguillara.

On the occasion of his wedding to Laura Orsini, undoubtedly daughter of Giulia Farnese and Orsino Orsini, in 1505 the fiefdom of Bassanello passed to Nicola Della Rovere and upon his death, in 1534, to his son Giulio who in turn left it as an inheritance to his sister Elena, who, married to Stefano Colonna, closed the Della Rovere cycle in Bassanello. From then on, the town remained under the Colonna family until 1700, then passed to the Colonna-Barberini family of Sciarra who held it until the fall of the Papal State.
