Santo Stefano di Sessanio (1,251 m above sea level), an ancient fortified village of around 120 inhabitants located in the Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga National Park, is one of the pearls of Abruzzo and, obviously, is included in the prestigious club of “I Most beautiful villages in Italy”. The suggestive historic centre, of medieval origin and of incredible beauty, is entirely built in white limestone, darkened by time, and is dominated by the imposing cylindrical tower, called "Medici" due to the presence of the coat of arms of the famous Florentine Dè Medici family, which in the sixteenth century it was the feudal lord of the small village, which previously belonged to the Piccolomini family. Outside the town centre, the cemetery church of S. Stefano is worth visiting and, on the edge of the small lake at the foot of the town, the charming little church of the Madonna del Lago (17th century). Near S. Stefano di Sessanio, in the territory of Calascio, there is the suggestive castle of Roccacalascio (1,512 m above sea level), one of the highest castles in Europe.
