THE ORIGINS OF CREMA.
Located in the lower Po Valley, just beyond the line of the resurgences, it is the main center of the province after the capital Cremona and gives its name to the entire northern part of the provincial territory: Cremasco. The origins of Crema are linked to the Lombard invasion of the 6th century. The name probably derives from the Lombard term 'Crem' which means 'high ground'. According to tradition, the foundation of the city dates back to 15 August 570 when, faced with the threat represented from the Lombard invasion, the inhabitants of the area found refuge in the highest part of the 'island of Mosa', preparing it for defense under the Judaism first of Cremete, Count of Palazzo, and then of Fulcherio. The toponyms Crema and Insula Fulcheria derive from these two characters. According to other sources, its foundation dates back to the 4th century when Milan was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Another version instead speaks of an older Celtic or Etruscan settlement.
