Lake Maggiore or Lake Verbano is an Alpine lake in the Northwest Italy, situated at Italian and Swiss borders. The lake is extended for 66 km, 35,64 mn, from Italy to Switzerland. The west coast is part of Piedomont (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Novara), the east coast is part of Lombardy (Varese), while the north coast is part of Switzerland (Canton Ticino). The 80,1% of lake surface is on the Italian territory and the remaining is on the Swiss area. The basin of ice origin has been filled from the River of Ticino, that it is its affluent and emissary.
The mountains are a repair against the northern cold currents and the climate results mild in Winter and Summer.
Arona is a city on the Piedmontese coast of Lake Maggiore in the province of Novara. The oldest area of the city overlooks the lake, behind the historic centre a rocky spur hosts the remains of the ancient Borromeo castle destroyed by Napoleone Bonaparte.
Historically, Arona was part of Visconti’s properties, in 1439 Filippo Maria Visconti left the feud to Vitaliano Borromeo and after, he obtained the feud of Angera too.
The most famous exponent of Borromeo family was born in Arona, Carlo Borromeo, and in his honor it was erected, on a hill in the back of the city, the famous Colosso of San Carlo.
The most tourist area of Arona is close to the coast of Lake Maggiore. The Marconi lakeside offers a panoramic pedestrian path until “Piazza del Popolo”, the most ancient square of the city. Alternatively there is “Corso Cavour”, a narrow pedestrian street where there are shops, ice cream parlors and bars. Parallel to Corso Cavour, there is “Piazza San Graziano”.
From Piazza del Popolo it is visible the rocky spur on which there are the remains of the “Rocca di Arona”, from whom people can see a beautiful panorama of Lake Maggiore.
