The village of Rocca Sigillina is located in the Caprio valley, where the stream receives the waters of the Cuccarello. It clings to the ridge of the buttress that descends steeply from the Apennines. It seems to be possible to touch the Marmagna, the Braiola and the Aquila, looming over this once strategic town and from which a wide panorama opens up to the Magra and then beyond, to the hills between Tuscany and Liguria. Here, well before the year 1000, a massive watchtower was erected along the "Lombard road", one of the most important of the time, which from the valley floor went up to the Cirone pass and from here reached the centers of the Po Valley. To this day, you can still walk or even mountain bike along this ancient road, until you reach the meadows of Logarghena. Today only a few traces of that medieval "fortress" remain, recently recovered and can be visited thanks to a daring iron staircase that leads to the space at the top, at the north end of the village, in front of the façade of that parish church that can be seen from miles away. Ruins of a coveted and disputed fortification on what, in the Middle Ages, was the southern border of the free municipality of Pontremoli. And where the ancient "Rocca Valsazzulina" was a strategic garrison. Those who possessed it could control the transits to and from the Apennines on the left bank of the Magra, avoiding the problematic transit to Pontremoli.
