PUTIGNANO is a municipality of 25,813 inhabitants located in the south-east of Bari, famous for its Carnival, the oldest in Europe, which has lasted for 622 years old. Its ancient village is elliptical in shape, protected over the centuries by mighty walls, of which the 3 main entrances, with the mighty walls and circular towers, which partly still surround the city, were erected by the Bailiff Giambattista Carafa in 1472. the year in which the Porta Barsento was also opened which connects to the Porta Grande or Maggiore along the road, called "la Chiancata". The ancient walls and the old castle had been demolished in 1219 by Frederick II due to the disobedience of the Putignano people, who had shown themselves too faithful to the pope for having denied Frederick II himself access to the city upon returning from a hunting trip. Putignano is, and remained Catholic, rich in art and culture: this is demonstrated by the numerous churches and convents present in the ancient city.
