Lonato del Garda is located in a large moraine area on the south-west shore of Lake Garda in a splendid position overlooking the lake and the Brescia plain. “Lonato” has uncertain origins and linguistic provenance of the toponym, but the reference to the marshes that must have surrounded the town in the past seems certain. A first mention of Lonato is found in documents from the tenth century, but certainly human settlements must have been in the area since the early Bronze Age. Inhabited since ancient times by a population of skilled pile-dwelling farmers, it was then the land of the Gauls and a garrison for the Gallic road in Roman times. Destroyed and rebuilt several times during the barbarian raids, it began to occupy its current position starting from the year one thousand and from 1300, by the Viscontis, it began to take on the appearance of a fortress village which still characterizes it today.
