Some historical information: “The building, built in 1577 and located in Corso di Porta Romana 3 in Milan, takes its name from Ludovico Acerbi, a Milanese senator, who purchased it around 1620 from the Rossi family of San Secondo. It is an ancient residence with three floors above ground, with a facade in the traditional Giallo Milano (which presumably replaced, in the 19th century, a pre-existing white color) and rather sober decorations. The palace has curvilinear balconies, straight-line frames and, in the portal, decorative lion heads. The splendor of the palace is above all perceptible in the internal rooms, which Acerbi had created with lavishness, wanting to compete in luxury with the Annoni family, owners of the building opposite. On the street-facing façade of the building there is still a cannonball dating back to the Five Days of Milan (March 1848) to signify that the building survived the Austrian cannonades. From Wikipedia (entry «Ludovico Acerbi»): From a noble family with the title of Marquis of Cisterna, he received the task of looking after the interests of the Spanish crown at the Holy See. In 1595 he was appointed by the viceroy of Naples, Count of Olivares, regent of the Grand Court of the Vicaria, where he remained until 1598. In 1600 he returned to his hometown, where he was appointed senator. In 1619 he became President of the Ordinary Judiciary and the following year a member of the Secret Council. He purchased the palace in question, which then took his name, where he led a life of great expense, with sumptuous parties, in a city impoverished by plagues. The memory of such a controversial character ignited the popular imagination which, distorting facts and dates, attributed to Ludovico Acerbi the nickname of Devil of Porta Romana. The marquis allegedly committed great atrocities during the plague of 1630, the same one described by Manzoni in The Betrothed.
