D Ugento (AFI: /uˈʤɛnto/[4], Ušèntu in Salento dialect) is an Italian municipality of 12,197 inhabitants in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipal territory is located in the lower Salento and includes a stretch of the coast of the Ionian Sea. The inhabited center rises partly on the site of ancient Ozan (Uxentum in Latin), an important Messapian city. It is the seat of the diocese of Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca. The municipality of Ugento was recognized as a city of art and a tourist economy location by the Puglia region in 2008 for its architectural, archaeological and environmental beauties. Since 14 November 2018 it has been twinned with Arcugnano. It is located on a modest hill at a height of 108 meters above sea level. The municipal area extends over an area of 98.68 km² and includes, in addition to the capital, the hamlets of Gemini and Torre San Giovanni, the marinas of Torre Mozza and Lido Marini and the Fontanelle area. The coast of about 12 km is mainly low and sandy, with rocks only in some short stretches. Close to this there are numerous artificial basins surrounded by scrub and Mediterranean scrub forests that extend into the hinterland, where they give way to a typically rural landscape, characterized by olive groves and vineyards on low hills of rocks and red earth.
