The city of Cherasco is located 288 meters above sea level, on the river terrace formed by the Stura di Demonte and the Tanaro, and has 8,422 inhabitants.
She was born on 12 November 1243 by will of the Municipality of Alba and of the vicar of Frederick II, Manfredi Lancia; It still retains the “castrum romanum” structure: a square plan with streets that intersect in a parallel and perpendicular manner. It has wide streets, porticoes and many civil and religious buildings from the medieval and baroque ages. Cherasco belonged to the Angevins, then to the Viscontis and at the mercy of the Spanish and French in the first half of the 16th century, until it finally passed to the Savoys (1559). In 1630 the war broke out and this time it was joined by the plague which spread throughout Piedmont; Cherasco, immune from the contagion, hosted the court with its entire entourage. The following year, the plenipotentiaries of Austria, France, Spain, Mantua and Monferrato, Cardinal Mazarin and King Vittorio Amedeo I stayed in Cherasco and signed the peace that put an end to the war for the succession of Mantua and Monferrato. In 1706 the court, having retreated from Turin besieged by the French, stayed again in Cherasco. In 1796 the armistice was signed between Vittorio Amedeo III and France which meant the definitive defeat of the Savoy State and the handing over of Cherasco to Napoleon. An illustrious and important history, which has made it a protagonist for centuries.
Today the name of Cherasco is linked to the Antiques Markets, the art exhibitions of Palazzo Salmatoris and two gastronomic specialties, the Snails and the “Kisses of Cherasco”; the former famous thanks to the International Institute of Heliciculture and the National Association of Heliciculturists, which promote mollusc farming on a large scale, the latter chocolates made from hazelnuts and dark chocolate, present in all the pastry shops in the city.
The structure of the City, the layout of the streets, the presence of the porticoes make the Historic Center of Cherasco one of the most suitable places for antiques markets, events proposed for over twenty years: in particular those of Antiques and Collectibles are 3 all year (one spring in March or April, one in September and one in December). Alongside these, a whole series of specialized markets have sprung up: antique and vintage furniture (in May); of ceramics and art glass, supported by a sector dedicated to vintage and collectible watches (in June); ancient books and paper, philately, vintage music and discography (in July); of antique toys and second-hand models and the exhibition-market of painting, sculpture and artisanal artistic production (in October); the market for high quality organic and natural food products with signature chocolate (in November).
Cherasco has also become a destination for many visitors for its numerous and extraordinary events that mark the whole year: its exhibitions are especially famous , which occupy the seventeenth-century Palazzo Salmatoris and other smaller exhibition venues. The artistic exhibitions of Palazzo Salmatoris, which take place from February to the end of the year offering a series of contemporary or modern painters, culminate with the autumn one: in ten years Cherasco has hosted names such as Picasso, De Pisis, Liguabue, Campigli, Morandi, Guttuso, De Chirico, Savinio, Chagall-Mirò-Magritte, Casorati and his School, Modigliani and the Italians in Paris, Carrà, “Sironi, Guttuso, Vedova.
