In the first centuries of the Roman Empire, Sant' Angelo was a pagan temple which was transformed into a small "Early Christian" church under the Emperor Constantine until, with the occupation of the Lombards, around 599, it was demolished and rebuilt much larger, adorning it with a bell tower and two beautiful side apses which remained intact even today through the centuries as true jewels due to their antiquity (sec. VII) simplicity and beauty.
The church of Sant' Angelo was declared a national monument in 1907.
