Sannicola is a town of ca. 6,000 inhabitants located in the Ionian coast of Salento, includes the villages of Chiesanuova and St. Simon, as well as much of the coastal town of Lido Conchiglie, and was established in 1908 by separation from the town of Gallipoli. From the point of view of weather Sannicola is part of Salento territory that has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot humid summers. In bisantina times the whole area was called up to the eighteenth century with the greek name Rodogallo, meaning "place of beautiful roses." Much talked about is the Salento dialect, which comes loaded with influences attributable to the rulers and to the people who settled in this area over the centuries: the Messapi, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lombards, Normans, Albanian, French and Spanish.
The particular strategic position just a few kilometers from Gallipoli is a real strong point, reaching quite easily the seaside resort of Punta Pizzo, Green Bay, Rivabella and Lido Conchiglie. The whole coast has a low and long beach composed of white dunes, made of beautiful sandy beaches with crystal clear water very popular in summer, and is interspersed with cliffs that open to beaches and hidden corners
