Fosdinovo (Fosdinoo in the Lunigiana dialect) is an Italian town of 4 692 inhabitants and 48.71 km² in the province of Massa-Carrara, gateway to the historic region of Lunigiana and located within the hydrographic basin of the Val di Magra.

Since prehistoric times, inhabited, it had its golden age between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, when it was the capital of an independent marquisate and governed by the most important branch of the Malaspina dello Spino Fiorito family, whose marquises were imperial vicars in Italy . This has left deep traces in local architecture, art and culture. The center, which passed almost unscathed through the turbulence of the last medieval centuries and the Tuscan sixteenth century, experienced periods of prosperity, enriching itself so much that in 1666 it was authorized by the Holy Roman Empire to mint its own coins. In the area only Massa and Tresana possessed a similar privilege.

At the end of the Napoleonic occupation of Tuscany, in the early nineteenth century, Fosdinovo was taken from the Malaspinas and placed by the Congress of Vienna (1814) under the authority of the Duchy of Massa, and shortly after under that of the Duchy of Modena , then ruled by the Este family. The family of Ferrara origin immediately made the municipality the capital of the ducal Lunigiana. In 1859 the town became part of the Kingdom of Italy. Also in the countryside and in the small towns of the Fosdinovese there were numerous clashes between partisans and Allies on the one hand and German forces on the other which culminated in the roundups at the end of November 1944 and in the last clashes and bombings of 23 April 1945.

was awarded the Orange Flag in 2014 by the Italian Touring Club. Fosdinovo is the eighth most populous municipality, the seventh most densely populated and the eleventh largest in its province.
