Colico on Lake Como
Colico is the last town we meet along the shore east of Lake Como, behind the town rises Mount Legnone (2609 m.) the highest peak of the Lario.

Colico was inhabited up to pre-Roman times, the area has always been a strategic passage for connections with the Valtellina, Valchiavenna and the Spluga pass. During the 15th century it suffered destruction and looting by the armies in transit, it became an unhealthy territory infested with malaria and the frequent flooding of the Adda river made matters worse.

Only after the reclamation of the Piani di Spagna and the opening of roads for the various steps by the Spaniards in the sec. XVII, Colico once again became an important inhabited centre. Testimony of the long period of Spanish domination is the Forte di Fuentes, built in 1600 on the hill of Monteggiolo and equipped with lodgings, hospital, chapel, today it is possible to see the remains, a very suggestive excursion.

Colico is a very important tourist center , as evidenced by the excellent accommodation resources present throughout the territory. The winds that characterize the area make the waters of Colico a splendid regatta field for both sailing and windsurfing. Among the sacred buildings, the famous Piona Abbey stands out, commissioned by Bishop Agrippino and dating back to the 7th century. Entering the abbey, you can visit the Church, the Cloister, the Capitulary hall. Inside the building that houses the products of the Piona monks, we can find medicinal herbs, honey and the famous liqueurs skilfully distilled according to the most ancient traditions, all natural products created by the industrious monks.
