The city of Cherasco, is located 288 meters above sea level, on the river terrace formed by the Stura di Demonte and the Tanaro, has 8,422 inhabitants.
She was born on 12 November 1243 by the will of the Municipality of Alba and the vicar of Frederick II, Manfredi Lancia; it still retains the “castrum romanum” structure: a square plan with streets that intersect in a parallel and perpendicular way. It has wide streets, arcades and many civil and religious buildings from the Middle Ages and Baroque.
Cherasco was owned by the Angevins, then by the Visconti and at the mercy of the Spanish and French in the first half of the 16th century, until it finally passed to the Savoy family (1559). In 1630 the war broke out and this time the plague was added and spread throughout Piedmont; Cherasco immune from contagion hosted the court with all the following. The following year the plenipotentiaries of Austria, France, Spain, Mantua and Monferrato, Cardinal Mazarin and King Vittorio Amedeo I stayed in Cherasco who signed the peace that put an end to the war for the succession of Mantua and Monferrato. In 1706 the court, having withdrawn from Turin besieged by the French, stayed again in Cherasco. In 1796 an armistice was signed between Vittorio Amedeo III and France which meant the definitive defeat of the Savoy State and the handing over of Cherasco to Napoleon.
An illustrious and important history, which made it the protagonist for centuries.
Today the name of Cherasco is linked to the Antiques Markets, to the art exhibitions of Palazzo Salmatoris and to two gastronomic specialties, the Snails and the “Baci di Cherasco”; the first famous thanks to the International Institute of Heliciculture and the National Association of Heliciculturists, which promote shellfish farming on a large scale, the second chocolates based on hazelnuts and dark chocolate, present in all the pastry shops in the city. structure of the city, the layout of the streets, the presence of the arcades make the historic center of Cherasco one of the most suitable places--35d87799e8e164d8bf666b873c8933b1!
