Musso on Lake Como
On the western shore of Lake Como we meet the village of Musso, the ancient houses of the village rise on a small and characteristic gulf, behind the town looms an enormous rocky spur called the Sasso di Musso. The town of Musso extends from the shore of Lake Como to the hamlets on the slopes of Mount Bregagno, the town owes its origin to the ancient white marble quarries that were already worked and exploited in Roman times, the Como Cathedral and the columns di San Lorenzo in Milan were built with this precious material. expanded the fortifications, quickly conquered all the lands around Lake Como and part of Brianza, was defeated ten years later by the Sforza allies with the Swiss Grisons.
In the historic center of Musso we find the church of San Biagio, formerly dedicated to Saints Nazaro and Celso, erected as a parish church in 1387, inside as well as valuable paintings and frescoes are the coats of arms and tombs of the Malacrida family. Not far from the Sasso di Musso, in a wonderful panoramic position stands the church of Sant'Eufemia which was built over an ancient pagan temple and included in the walls of the castle, spared from destruction during the siege of 1532 and remodeled in 1662.
On the slopes below the church of Sant'Eufemia in 1858 the noble Giuseppe Manzi created the famous Giardino del Merlo, for some years a destination for tourists and travelers, full of exotic plants, galleries, fountains and suspension bridges, today some structures of what was once a natural amusement park.
