Gravedona on Lake Como
Gravedona is among the greatest artistic centers of Lake Como. Of pre-Roman origins, Gravedona was a prosperous municipality in the Middle Ages, allied to Milan during the Ten Years' War. In 1500 it constituted the capital of the Tre Pievi Superiore of Lake Como, then passed into fiefdom to Tolomeo Gallio, it always managed to maintain a certain autonomy even under the lordships of the Visconti and the Sforza.
The peculiar pride of Gravedona was the art goldsmith thanks above all to the Sergregori family. The town's economy in the past was based on fishing, agriculture and livestock breeding. Today Gravedona is an important commercial and summer resort centre. Among the palaces, the one that belonged to Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio stands out, known as the palace of the four towers, a strong and at the same time elegant architecture designed by Pellegrini in the late 1500s.
Among the mountains of Gravedona a panoramic road climbs up to Livo, 665 m Peglio whose parish church is adorned with outstanding works of art including Flemish paintings and paintings from the school of Guercino. From Peglio you can continue to Livio from where a path starts for the Como refuge at 1790 m. high, on the shores of Lake Darengo. The most famous monument of Gravedona is the church of Santa Maria del Tiglio, originally a baptistery (5th century) transformed into a Romanesque church between 1150 and 1175, covered in white and gray marble, and with partly Nordic architectural features.
We recall the Church of San Vincenzo built around 1050 on a previous chapel of the 5th century, it was rebuilt between the 17th and 18th centuries. Of the ancient structure, the crypt and two inscriptions from the 6th century are preserved.--2b5b15fee63465cc6a8d217559f40f19!
