Musso
On the western shore of Lake Como we meet the village of Musso, the ancient houses of the village stand on a small and characteristic gulf, behind the town looms an enormous rocky outcrop called the Sasso di Musso. The municipality of Musso extends from the shore of Lake Como to the hamlets on the slopes of Mount Bregagno, the town owes its origin to the ancient white marble quarries which were already worked and exploited in Roman times, the Cathedral of Como and the columns of San Lorenzo in Milan were built with this precious material.
Musso is a town rich in history, in the XIII century the territory was a fief of the Malacrida family allied to the Duchy of Milan, in 1522 Gian Giacomo Medici known as the Medeghino conquered the castle and enlarged the fortifications, in a short time conquered all the lands around Lake Como and part of Brianza, was defeated ten years later by the Sforza allied with the Swiss Grisons.
In the historic center of Musso we find the church of San Biagio, formerly dedicated to the Santi Nazaro e Celso, erected as a parish church in 1387, inside, as well as valuable paintings and frescoes, the coats of arms and tombs of the Malacrida family are conserved. Not far from Sasso di Musso, in a stupendous panoramic position stands the church of Sant'Eufemia which was built over an ancient pagan temple and included in the castle walls, spared from destruction during the siege of 1532 and remodeled in 1662.
Sui slopes below the church of Sant'Eufemia in 1858 the noble Giuseppe Manzi created the famous Giardino del Merlo, for a few years a destination for tourists and travellers, full of exotic plants, galleries, fountains and suspension bridges, today some structures of that which was a natural amusement park.--c64edaba2f1481e199d03bf24736ec8e!
