Notes on the area: The sanctuary is of medieval origin, and probably dates back to the 12th century. The name derives from the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary among the branches of a birch tree. The Madonna would have appeared to a child who, at the time of the barbarian invasions, was fleeing after his parents had been killed. The exhausted child fell asleep in the place where the sanctuary stands today; upon awakening the Madonna appeared to him who consoled him, placed him in a sort of cradle carved into the rock (of which traces would still remain).
