Country house Contrada Gazzara, Centro, Terrasini

a017/22 - Terrasini - The castle of Gazzara was built by Baron Donato Gazzara between 1668-84, the period in which he held the feud. It was for him the hunting lodge. Said Castle gives its name to the district; a memory of the Benedictine fathers of 1749 recalls "IL CASTELLO" of the baron which until then retained some traces of the old architecture. Construction characteristics-building typology, the plan of the side tower is rectangular and the vault in dry stones (Dammuso style). The vault and the attics are barrel vaulted. The masonry techniques: dry stone masonry and the bearing edges in tuff ashlars. Originally the houses consisted of three parts: two lateral, and one central. A lateral part and the central one are reduced to ruins, the lateral turret however is in precarious conditions. The whole of the turret consists of a plastered barrel vault. On the left side wall there is a pre-existing door that is still visible, but not accessible. The upper part has the barrel floor entirely; the roof is also barrel vaulted; the upper part cannot be accessed as there are no connecting stairs. Visible from the outside are some side windows and loopholes; in the part below there is an access door. Today the ruined "CASTELLO" is also called "CASE DI GAZZARA". The Superintendency has given a favorable opinion on a project presented for restoration.
