Serina is an Italian town of 2,195 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. Located in the valley of the same name, lateral to the Brembana valley, it is about 30 kilometers north of the Orobic capital. The origins of the town seem to date back to the 1st century BC at the time of Roman domination, when the whole Serina valley was reunited under the municipality of Bergamo . The first settlements date back to this period, also created thanks to the discovery of iron mines in the area near the border with Dossena.

The toponym also dates back to Roman times, and seems to be connected to that of the Serio river, located in the valley Seriana. This which meant a flow or current, attributable to the stream, homonymous of the village, which crosses the upper part of the valley.

However, the first written documents attesting the existence of the village date back only to the 11th century, a Serina began to carve out an important space for herself in the commercial sector. In fact, the via Mercatorum passed through this basin, an ancient traffic route that connected the Seriana valley with the upper Brembana valley, which had its most important village in Serina.

In this regard, some documents dating back to the Italian Risorgimento attest that Serina it had almost 1,500 inhabitants, even double the nearby center of San Pellegrino Terme.

The economy experienced periods of great splendor also thanks to the Roman mines for the extraction of iron, which allowed the development of workshops suitable for processing the extracted material , which was used for the construction of weapons and various iron tools.

The wool industry also benefited from the presence of the Ambria stream, which allowed the machinery for the production of thick Bergamo cloth to function.

The Middle Ages saw the center subjected to the power of the Guelph family of the Torriani since the year 1265. This influence lasted until the fifteenth century when the arrival of the Venetian domination led Serina to be the capital of the Upper Brembana Valley (complete with vicar of the Serenissima) role which he held until 1797, when the area became part of the Cisalpine republic.

It should be remembered that the town was the birthplace, in 1480, of the painter Jacopo Negretti, better known as Palma il Vecchio.
