The name of Piazza Brembana seems to derive etymologically from "piano" (square) and from the name of a pre-Roman language that takes "brembo" in the meaning of the root "brem" that is "resound". The same name given to the Brembo river seems to have this origin, in the sense that its waters, with the torrential course, as they say "echoed" chatter in the valley. Even Piazza (as the center was originally called) had an economy linked to pastoralism and agriculture, lending the flat area to be particularly cultivated with potatoes and grains. The art of ironworking was also quite widespread and historians recall how in the Valley locality there was a "melting furnace" of this metal, owned by the FERRAREZZA family originally from Lenna, well known throughout the Valley. The junction of the roads that go up the main branches of Brembo, Piazza was the seat of the administrative Vicariate of the Upper Brembana Valley which included the municipalities beyond the Goggia. It is currently the headquarters of the Brembana Valley Mountain Community and hosts an important weekly market which is a regular appointment for the area's livestock operators. It is within these periodic meetings that the idea of reinforcing the suffering of the mountain economy has developed, qualifying the best characteristics of the products with origin marks, as today happens successfully especially for the dairy products that are able to secure stable and promising market shares. The relational vocation of Piazza Brembana has spread widely also because the town, by diverting the traffic that is purely passing outside, offers a civil and inviting urban space, almost familiar in the friendly atmosphere that favors the walk and the rubbish along the avenue of the most elegant shops.

History
The ancient age
The first human settlements date back to the 2nd century BC when the Romans included the country, together with the neighboring villages, in a pagus called pagus brembanus.

The new colonizers exploited mineral resources (mainly iron) present in the surrounding mountains, and created numerous ways of connection with the nearby pagus Saturnius (located in Val Seriana), also with a flourishing mining activity.

The Middle Ages
This activity meant that the whole area also prospered during the Middle Ages, when the village was affected by a growing demographic development due to improved living conditions, but also to the immigration of numerous groups fleeing the fratricidal struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines.
