Fontanegli is a village in the hills on the left side of the valley, once a fraction of the municipality of Bavari. The wealth of springs in the area (from which the name of the town derives) made it an important stage on the ancient road which, through the Sella di Bavari and the Sturla Valley, connects the Bisagno Valley with the Genoese east. The route up to the pass offers a broad panorama of the Val Bisagno and the mountains surrounded by forts. Three ancient holiday palaces still exist in the town: the eighteenth-century Palazzo Ferretto, painted in pink and white stripes, today a home for the elderly, the seventeenth-century Palazzo Raggi, near the church and further downstream, Palazzo Centurione Thellung.
