PRIVATE CHURCH OF RONCOVETRO DI VEDRIANO - CANOSSA (RE): Portion of building from ground to roof used as an oratory / chapel, with adjoining courtyard area of relevance. Available immediately, with authentic frescoes and paintings. Ancient documents report the fact that already in the year 1116 the village of Roncovetro di Vedriano, which at that time was called Roncoveteri, housed a mansio of the monks of Canossa. It is interesting to remember that these places were the heart of the lands of Matilde, Countess of Canossa, grandson of Emperor Henry III and cousin of Emperor Henry IV, related to Pope Stephen IV ... the Grand Countess, Vice Queen of Italy , died in 1115 and Roncovetro is probably a gift made by her to the monks of her native town. The Latin word mansio in the Middle Ages indicated a fortified farm. This Latin word still survives today in the English manor, in the French manoir, in the Italian manor or mansion. Manors or mansions owned by religious orders. Like the Templars for example, they were normally fortified and provided with a small place of worship for the religious who resided there and the people who tended to settle around them, for security reasons. Even in Roncovetro we still find the remains of an ancient tower-house, while the church of S. Giovanni Battista still exists on the probable site of the ancient church. The interiors are typical of the second half of the 1600s while the front is more reminiscent of that typical of many medieval churches in the Reggio Apennines such as the Pieve di Pianzo or the oratory of Beleo, both dating back to around the year 1000.
